Description
Diatomaceous Earth is an organic natural product aimed at controlling insects. It’s made from the fossilised remains of tiny, marine organisms called diatoms. These remains are ground to a fine powder, or “earth”. On a microscopic level, the particles have many sharp jagged edges. These edges are able to cut and pierce the exoskeleton of insects and clog their joints. The wounds suffered by the insects are terminal as they will effectively “bleed” to death. It is effective as long as it stays dry. It will also have negative effects on beneficial insects like bees, ladybugs and praying mantis. Not effective on molluscs like slugs and snails and not harmful to earth worms.
Diatomaceous Earth is non toxic for birds, fish and pets. Apply a thin layer to the top of potted plants as preventive. When worked into organic soils, it can provide plants with available silica, manganese, iron, calcium and magnesium.
Our Diatomaceous Earth is food grade, of fresh water origin, untreated and sun dried. Fresh water Diatomaceous Earth is on the GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) list of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Also deemed safe by the Directorate of Food Control for South Africa. Silicon Dioxide occurs naturally in the body.
